Speaker:

We are actually concluding

a sermon series.

2

:

That we started several weeks ago

called the God of the Christmas story.

3

:

And so what we've been doing over the last

several weeks is looking at the Christmas

4

:

story, but trying to figure out what do

we notice about our God through this?

5

:

What do we see about our Heavenly

Father as we examine and study

6

:

out a very familiar passage?

7

:

Of the Christmas story, and so we've been

looking at just the first two chapters

8

:

from the gospel Matthew and so in the

first one Matthew chapter 1 We saw how the

9

:

God of the scriptures is the God of hope

and we saw that through the genealogy of

10

:

Jesus Then we move forward and we looked

at verses 13 to 25 and we saw how God is

11

:

a God of mystery by bringing about the

birth of his son through the Virgin Mary.

12

:

And then last week we talked about the

God of invitation chapter 2 verses 1

13

:

through 12 and how God when he brings the

Magi really is inviting all of mankind

14

:

to an eternal relationship with him.

15

:

And today we'll conclude by finishing

out chapter two and we'll see how God is

16

:

a God of provision, a God of provision.

17

:

Let's go to our Father in prayer.

18

:

Father, we thank you so much for this

opportunity for most of the OC church

19

:

to come together on this Christmas

Eve and be able to worship you.

20

:

God, we've been encouraged just to see

friends that we haven't seen in a long

21

:

time, to be able to sing songs about the

birth of your son Jesus, and God, to be

22

:

reminded that you provide in the waters.

23

:

Father, it was so encouraging to see

Josephine get baptized yesterday.

24

:

Father, as she has entered a new

life, and we thank you because it

25

:

was Jesus who allowed us all to

have an opportunity at eternal life.

26

:

Father, I pray that you will speak.

27

:

Father, it's not about

anything else except you.

28

:

May you speak to every soul.

29

:

Father, put to the side any

distraction that can get in the way

30

:

from hearing the message you have.

31

:

In Jesus name, Amen.

32

:

Amen.

33

:

Now again, provision means to provide.

34

:

Says, we see if God is the God

of provision means God is the

35

:

God who provides for his people.

36

:

So let's get into the scriptures.

37

:

Matthew chapter two,

starting off in verse 13.

38

:

And those in the coastline,

south and central ministries.

39

:

I know I haven't had a chance to

speak in a long time to you or

40

:

maybe you've never heard me speak.

41

:

So let me remind you of

something real quickly.

42

:

Then if we want the next

several minutes to go well, I

43

:

need you to be fully engaged.

44

:

And I need a couple of amens.

45

:

Oh, my man, what's going on?

46

:

It's been a minute.

47

:

All right, so we need some amens.

48

:

We need some hallelujahs.

49

:

You know what I'm saying?

50

:

We need some come on and all

that good stuff We just don't

51

:

need to hear get off the stage.

52

:

That's the last thing you need to

say All right, if you do that, the

53

:

Lord will strike you where you sit.

54

:

Okay.

55

:

All right.

56

:

All right.

57

:

Let's go ahead Let's get into it Matthew

chapter 2 verse 13 It says when they

58

:

had gone an angel the Lord appeared to

Joseph in a dream get up He said, take the

59

:

child and his mother and escape to Egypt.

60

:

Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is

going to search for the child to kill him.

61

:

So he got up, took the child

and his mother during the night

62

:

and left for Egypt, where he

stayed until the death of Herod.

63

:

And so was fulfilled what the

Lord had said through the prophet.

64

:

Out of Egypt I called my son.

65

:

When Herod realized that he had

been outwitted by the Magi, he

66

:

was furious and he gave orders to

kill all the boys in Bethlehem.

67

:

And it's vicinity who were two years

old and under in accordance with the

68

:

time he had learned from the Magi.

69

:

Then what was fulfilled then what

was said through the prophet Jeremiah

70

:

was fulfilled a voice is heard around

my weeping and greet morning Rachel

71

:

weeping for her children and refusing

to be comforted because they are no

72

:

more after Herod died an angel the Lord

appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt

73

:

and said Get up, take the child and his

mother and go to the land of Israel.

74

:

For those who were trying to

take the child's life are dead.

75

:

So he got up, took the child and his

mother and went to the land of Israel.

76

:

But when he heard that Hercules was

reigning in Judea in place of his

77

:

father Herod, he was afraid to go there.

78

:

Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew

to the district of Galilee, and he went

79

:

and lived in a town called Nazareth.

80

:

So was fulfilled what was said

through the prophets, he, that

81

:

he would be called a Nazarene.

82

:

Let's stop right there.

83

:

Hopefully you already caught it.

84

:

But we see the God of provision

on full display in this passage.

85

:

And we're going to break

it down here a little bit.

86

:

And so in verses 13 and 14, we see

that God provides provision through

87

:

providing protection from Herod.

88

:

Again, provision means to provide, and

so this God of provision provides in many

89

:

ways and provides many different things.

90

:

In the first off, we see

that God provides protection.

91

:

Herod wants to kill the child, Jesus.

92

:

And so he tells him to move and to

escape, and he's warned in a dream.

93

:

We also see God provides

direction for the family.

94

:

Hey, going over to Egypt.

95

:

Later on, going over to Israel.

96

:

Now what's interesting and really

cool about Egypt is that, you

97

:

know, Egypt actually had a large

population of Jewish people.

98

:

And so this would actually

be the destination that many

99

:

Jews would go to whenever the

nation faced trouble or trials.

100

:

Many of them would, would, would

leave town and they would go to Egypt.

101

:

And so there were large colonies.

102

:

And in fact, one scholar said there

was probably at least a million

103

:

people in the land of Egypt.

104

:

A million Jews in the land of Egypt.

105

:

And so it's interesting,

God says, Go to Egypt.

106

:

You got a bunch of people there.

107

:

By the time you arrive, you'll fit in.

108

:

You'll be okay with your newborn.

109

:

And you'll probably have a safer, not

safer, but a quicker way to get on

110

:

your feet and provide a way of living.

111

:

Then he says, alright, I

want you to go to Nazareth.

112

:

Now we know from the gospel of

Luke that that's Joseph's hometown.

113

:

So now you can go back.

114

:

Don't go back to Bethlehem,

but go to Nazareth.

115

:

On over to the area of Galilee and

Nazareth, hometown, you can probably

116

:

get quickly back on your feet and

be able to provide for your family.

117

:

So he provides direction.

118

:

We also see that God provides

resources for the trip.

119

:

If you remember, the Magi, I know

some of you guys weren't with

120

:

us last week, but most of us are

very familiar with the passage.

121

:

But the Magi came and

they provided some gifts.

122

:

Let's go and look at it again.

123

:

On coming to the house, they saw

the child with his mother Mary, and

124

:

they bowed down and worshipped him.

125

:

Then they opened their treasures

and presented him with gifts of

126

:

gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

127

:

Now again we understand there's A lot

of spiritual implications and symbolism

128

:

that took place in these gifts.

129

:

But guess what?

130

:

They were practical

means of transportation.

131

:

And by the time they

get there, guess what?

132

:

Hey man, I got some gold.

133

:

I got some frankincense I could,

man, can I get, let's, let's

134

:

barter, let's exchange so I can

provide for my wife and my newborn.

135

:

Well, the Lord provides.

136

:

I'm sure Joseph was like, thank you,

Magi, because a brother needed that coin.

137

:

You know what I'm saying?

138

:

Some of y'all like, yeah, thank you

for that, that bonus this month.

139

:

Or thank you just for that

extra check that came in.

140

:

We also see that God provides

reassurance to trust him.

141

:

He provided it then, but as Matthew writes

this letter for this Jewish Christian

142

:

audience, and that we are enabled and

benefited to be able to read ourselves,

143

:

we are reminded that God provides

reassurance that we can trust him.

144

:

The Bible is filled with many scriptures

saying, Trust God, do not fear.

145

:

And we see in the passages here

that Matthew decides, you know what,

146

:

let's take some of these passages.

147

:

We don't have enough time to

break down the prophecies and

148

:

how peculiar they really are.

149

:

But he provides these scriptures

to say, hey, you know what?

150

:

God has been present the whole time.

151

:

God's had a plan the whole time.

152

:

God's been inviting his

people the whole time.

153

:

And God's been providing and

still provides the whole time.

154

:

Again, we see the God of hope.

155

:

We see the God of mystery.

156

:

We see the God of invitation, and

we see the God of provision as

157

:

we examine the Christmas story.

158

:

And so God is providing all these

things, and here's the great thing about

159

:

it, brothers and sisters, is that God

is still the God of provision today.

160

:

He 2, 000 years ago, I'm

not gonna provide anymore.

161

:

I did enough.

162

:

Even though He could, and that

would still be sufficient.

163

:

But he's still the God of provision today.

164

:

That means he provides for his

people now and he will provide.

165

:

God provides an escape route

from danger in our lives.

166

:

He'll provide some shelter and protection

from evil that is lurking in our lives.

167

:

He'll provide direction for our life.

168

:

Support means and necessities to survive,

and that will strengthen our faith in Him.

169

:

Protection, direction, resources,

reassurance, often seen and

170

:

experienced today in different ways.

171

:

Sometimes the miraculous, sometimes

it's just simple divine methods of God.

172

:

All available for you and me this hour.

173

:

Let's break down a couple of these.

174

:

Church, are you still with me?

175

:

God provides through his word.

176

:

Think about it.

177

:

Protection, resources, reassurance,

direction for our lives, help, evidence

178

:

to trust him, all found in the scriptures.

179

:

Also, through his Holy Spirit.

180

:

The power, the strength, and direction

to make things clear, although the

181

:

Holy Spirit does it in different

ways on different occasions.

182

:

He also provides through his church.

183

:

God working through relationships, advice,

intangible help, intangible resources.

184

:

Have you ever been helped

by anybody in the church?

185

:

If you say no, yes you have.

186

:

How'd you even get here today?

187

:

Okay, somebody in the church.

188

:

I'm sure the Holy Spirit

didn't direct you here.

189

:

Maybe he did, but I doubt that.

190

:

You see, God provides through

his word, through his spirit,

191

:

and through his church.

192

:

So what does this mean for you?

193

:

In me today.

194

:

It means we can trust God.

195

:

It means we can trust God.

196

:

We can trust God's plan and directions

for our lives that are found in

197

:

scripture or that are directly

designed for us in our lives.

198

:

God's provided a plan and we can

trust his plan to overcome evil and

199

:

give eternal salvation through his

son, Jesus, and through his return.

200

:

Someday we can trust his promises.

201

:

We can trust that following His

word will benefit our lives,

202

:

benefit our relationships,

and benefit those around us.

203

:

We can trust that.

204

:

And so what does that

mean we should do then?

205

:

Well, I think it's simple.

206

:

Trust and follow.

207

:

The response to the God of provision

is to trust Him and to follow

208

:

His direction for our lives.

209

:

To trust that He'll provide

and then to follow His will.

210

:

But see, we have to learn to place our

trust in God's protective timing and care.

211

:

And so we might have it for a moment,

but we need to be reminded of it.

212

:

I got into an accident last Wednesday.

213

:

I know man.

214

:

You telling me it appears that I'm at

fault But I've been struggling every

215

:

single day, and I'm like I don't know

if I was at fault even this morning

216

:

I was like Karina I think he cut in

front of me But I'm not gonna get

217

:

into the whole story because then I'll

start struggling okay And I might just

218

:

go in some other place spiritually

okay, so now we have this hassle of

219

:

dealing because it now It's a total

loss Raul knows I call Raul like man.

220

:

I'm in trouble And so it's a total loss

and so now here we are and I'm starting to

221

:

fret I'm looking like what should we do?

222

:

I'm asking Kenny Barber

for advice the other day.

223

:

And so I'm there and Karina she's

like God's gonna provide She's like

224

:

he's always provided for us a car.

225

:

I was like you right.

226

:

That's true.

227

:

That's right Okay, and it helped me.

228

:

I did say a hallelujah.

229

:

I was like, you know what God

provided this car He provided that

230

:

car that car that car man got a bit.

231

:

He's got a track record Why am I tripping?

232

:

Let's see.

233

:

We need to learn this again.

234

:

We might have it for a moment, right?

235

:

The problem is it maybe if you're like

me is that we can easily forget and

236

:

then we doubt which leads to missed

opportunities, which usually lead to

237

:

miss blessings in our lives, which can

often lead to mistakes that we make.

238

:

Send or damage and or damage

to our lives or those around us

239

:

because we didn't trust him enough.

240

:

We decided I'll make this decision.

241

:

I won't seek input because

I know what's good.

242

:

I have a track record and

then what happens is regrets.

243

:

But if we can go back to the God of the

Christmas story and we can remember he's

244

:

a God of provision that we can remember,

recall and stand firm in our trust.

245

:

But then we have to follow

his lead and direction.

246

:

It's a two parter.

247

:

We have to follow God's direction.

248

:

Just think about this.

249

:

God gave direction to Joseph and Mary.

250

:

He gave them a plan, but then

he gave them some direction.

251

:

So Joseph and Mary, their responsibility

and their role was to do what?

252

:

To trust him, but not trust him by staying

put, but actually following what he said.

253

:

Just imagine if they decided

we trust you, but we aren't

254

:

going to follow what you said.

255

:

How would that Christmas story turn out?

256

:

I don't know if me and you

would be here this morning.

257

:

And so what do we learn?

258

:

Is trusting is good, but it's

not true trust until we actually

259

:

make a step in following.

260

:

And so what we learn, and this hit me as

I was studying this out, is that this, is

261

:

that revelation requires participation.

262

:

When God reveals something to

us through his word, through his

263

:

people, through the Holy Spirit, it

requires you and me to act upon it.

264

:

Just to receive it and do nothing

with it is useless and pointless.

265

:

So when God reveals his eternal

will for our lives on a lifestyle

266

:

of holiness, we have to trust him,

but then actually follow through.

267

:

When God starts to reveal things for

your life individually, you gotta trust

268

:

him, but then follow his direction.

269

:

Because when God provides

direction, then the protection

270

:

and help we have, we experience.

271

:

You see, revelation means

nothing without participation.

272

:

I'm sure a lot of you, especially

you coming from different parts

273

:

of town, you probably used

GPS this morning, didn't you?

274

:

Look, she's nodding her

head like, Yeah, I sure did.

275

:

I've never been over here before.

276

:

She's like, Placentia,

is that in Orange County?

277

:

You know what I'm saying?

278

:

And so you used GPS.

279

:

Just imagine if you used GPS and

you decide, I'm gonna turn it

280

:

on, but I'm not gonna follow it.

281

:

I'm gonna have that, that screen on, but

I'm just gonna go the way I wanna go.

282

:

Where would you end up?

283

:

Who knows where?

284

:

You might end up in Long Beach.

285

:

Riverside, Mexicali, who knows?

286

:

But here's the thing, here's what

happens, brothers and sisters.

287

:

We do this on a consistent basis.

288

:

God reveals something, we turn it

on, but yet we don't follow it.

289

:

Then we end up going, man, I'm

lost in my Spiritually, I'm off.

290

:

This didn't go well.

291

:

Man, this is causing damage and a mess.

292

:

But the direction, the spiritual

GPS was on the whole time.

293

:

We claim to believe it and follow it.

294

:

But we decided to veer into our own path.

295

:

You see, revelation

requires participation.

296

:

It requires us to do something.

297

:

But that's when we experience

the God of provision.

298

:

We experience it, we see it,

we testify with our own lives.

299

:

Once we actually trust

And follow His direction.

300

:

This is why I need time in God's Word.

301

:

This is why you need time in God's Word.

302

:

So you can have an understanding

of God's will for your life.

303

:

This is why we need personal

devotional time in prayer with God.

304

:

So His Spirit can minister to us.

305

:

This is why we need

relationships in the church.

306

:

Because sometimes we're not listening.

307

:

And we need God.

308

:

And God's saying, look I'm going to speak

through my children to help you out.

309

:

You see, God's provision is

experience when we trust and follow.

310

:

Let, let, let's go ahead and

let's come in for a landing here.

311

:

Let's get real practical.

312

:

Those in the north know we

like action steps over here.

313

:

And so I want to give us

some action steps this week.

314

:

You can practice, you can put this into

practice in the next 24 hours, okay?

315

:

And some will be a little bit longer.

316

:

But here's, here's the first one.

317

:

Go ahead and thank God for

his provision in your life.

318

:

Spend some time in the next 24

hours thanking God for providing.

319

:

When you start off, you'll end

up going down a longer list.

320

:

Then you imagined you start there.

321

:

I'll just give him a couple minutes

And if you start to really think you're

322

:

providing you're gonna go down a path

and it's a good path And you'll start

323

:

to appreciate the God of proof you start

to be reminded that God will provide

324

:

this week Second go ahead and follow

his will in that one area of your life.

325

:

You know that area You know that area.

326

:

You know that area that God's

been trying to minister to.

327

:

He's been trying to say something.

328

:

But you've been hesitant.

329

:

You've been resisting.

330

:

Like, I don't know if I really

want to turn on the GPS.

331

:

I don't know if I really want

to listen to it right now.

332

:

I want to encourage you to make a

decision that you will follow through

333

:

in his direction in your life.

334

:

Whatever that that area is, maybe

it's being humble, forgiving

335

:

or asking for forgiveness.

336

:

Sharing the love of Jesus

with a family member.

337

:

Prioritizing God first over

school or work in the new year.

338

:

Whatever it is, follow His

will in that area in your life.

339

:

You know, our Heavenly

Father is a God of provision.

340

:

And we will experience His provision when

we trust Him and follow His direction.

341

:

We're going to take communion right now.

342

:

This is where we have the emblems, the

bread and the juice, they represent

343

:

Jesus body and blood that was sacrificed

so that we could have salvation.

344

:

And we remember as we look at the

God of the Christmas story is that

345

:

He is the God who provided Jesus

to be our Redeemer and Savior.

346

:

God provided Jesus to be

the example on how to live.

347

:

And God provided Jesus

to atone for our sins.

348

:

Let's close out with a very familiar

passage in John chapter three, verse

349

:

16, for God so loved the world that

he gave his one and only son that

350

:

whoever believes in him shall not

perish, but have eternal life for God

351

:

did not send his son into the world

to condemn the world, but to save the

352

:

world through him, the God of provision.

353

:

Let's pray.

354

:

Father, we thank you so

much for sending your son.

355

:

God, you provided.

356

:

Salvation through your son.

357

:

You provided atonement for

our sins through your son.

358

:

You provided forgiveness through your son.

359

:

You provided hope through your son.

360

:

You provided peace through your son.

361

:

You provided joy through your son.

362

:

You provided the ultimate

example of love through your son.

363

:

You provided the church through your son.

364

:

You provided us the Holy

Spirit through your son.

365

:

You provided us a new resurrected

life through your son.

366

:

We thank you for your methods.

367

:

We thank you for your decision.

368

:

We thank you for your character.

369

:

We thank you that we can have an

eternal relationship with you.

370

:

Thank you, not just for Christmas

events and celebrations, but

371

:

thank you for Jesus being born.

372

:

And God, we thank you for being

a God of hope, being a God of

373

:

mystery, being a God of invitation

and being the God of provision.

374

:

We pray in the name of Jesus.

375

:

Amen.
