Gospel Grace

In this heartfelt sermon, Greg Marutzky discusses the theme of 'Gospel Grace,' emphasizing the profound and transformative power of Jesus' grace as demonstrated in the story of the crucified thief. Greg hits on the importance of embracing God's grace, both intellectually and emotionally. Using personal stories, biblical recounts, and reflective poetry, Greg underscores that grace is an unearned gift that requires humility and acceptance. He also critiques historical fluctuations in the understanding of grace, urging the need to balance theology with the personal experience of God's mercy and goodness. Through the poignant tale of the repentant thief on the cross who asked Jesus to 'remember me,' Greg illustrates that even in our most undeserving moments, grace can change our lives.

Greg:

You know, this was my cue to come out after that song, but

2

:

I came out too early and I stood

up here while my wife talked.

3

:

Nothing theological about that.

4

:

It just rose my, uh, probably

nervousness to talk to you this morning.

5

:

And so, uh, but I didn't want

to leave once I figured out

6

:

I shouldn't have been here.

7

:

So, uh, I wanted to show my

respect to her and listen to her.

8

:

And, you know, it all works out

though because she's so pretty and

9

:

she's a good introduction to me.

10

:

If you like her, then

maybe you can like me.

11

:

Amen?

12

:

And so that's the way it's

been most of our life.

13

:

Uh, I am, uh, but I was a little

embarrassed, so I wanted to get

14

:

that out to start with, alright?

15

:

I, you know, if I were more of

a model, I wouldn't have minded.

16

:

I would have posed, but,

uh, it's not really me.

17

:

Not really me.

18

:

But I did do something that I learned at

a preaching retreat a couple weeks ago.

19

:

They said, when you speak,

you need to make eye contact.

20

:

And so while I was up here,

yes, I was looking at you.

21

:

And I was looking at

you straight in the eye.

22

:

So you would look back at me.

23

:

And I'm looking even to the back.

24

:

I looked in the back.

25

:

I saw you up there.

26

:

I see you.

27

:

Alright?

28

:

I got cataract surgery

so I can finally see you.

29

:

Alright?

30

:

You got an OG in the OC this morning.

31

:

Amen?

32

:

Alright.

33

:

And, here's the way I preach, guys.

34

:

I do good.

35

:

If you do good.

36

:

It's an intersection between

the leader and the follower.

37

:

That's what I believe preaching is.

38

:

And so, the more you encourage

me, the more I can encourage you.

39

:

So, it's symbiotic.

40

:

We're working together.

41

:

And I really like you guys

have a great lapel mic.

42

:

So I can wander around, get my steps

in, get a little exercise going.

43

:

It's awesome, you know.

44

:

Uh, you, you guys laugh, but when

you get to my age, you're gonna

45

:

be remembering that, alright?

46

:

Anything to get those steps in.

47

:

This morning, I'm gonna

talk about gospel grace.

48

:

All right, gospel grace,

and I'm writing a book.

49

:

I've got it about halfway done, and it's

about the encounters of Jesus with people.

50

:

Everybody that he encountered,

how he gave grace to people.

51

:

And I believe this is one of the

greatest needs in our movement.

52

:

For us to balance our theology.

53

:

We have great theology about lordship,

about discipleship, about the

54

:

crucifixion of self, denying self.

55

:

You know, we have great conviction

about the Bible and God's

56

:

covenant for us and his promises.

57

:

But we need to have a great theology

and be able to embody, be able to just

58

:

feel, experience the mercy and the

goodness and the grace of God, amen?

59

:

And I, I've known about it, I understood

it intellectually, but to be able to

60

:

get it from the head to the heart,

that's sometimes the greatest distance

61

:

you can travel in any endeavor.

62

:

From the head to the heart.

63

:

And so this morning, I invite

you not just to listen to a

64

:

story I know you've heard before.

65

:

Alright?

66

:

I know you're familiar with this story.

67

:

But I want you to listen

to it with your heart.

68

:

Jesus said in the parables, he's told

parables because they see with their

69

:

eyes, they hear with their ears.

70

:

But they need to understand

with their hearts.

71

:

And so open up your heart

this morning to the Lord.

72

:

To the spirit of the Lord.

73

:

Cause he's here with us.

74

:

Where two or three are

gathered in his name.

75

:

He's with us.

76

:

And the word of God is living and active.

77

:

So all I gotta do is read the word.

78

:

And it's gonna be living and active.

79

:

It's gonna affect you.

80

:

It's gonna affect me.

81

:

We need to commune and

fellowship with one another.

82

:

But most of all with God this morning.

83

:

I don't believe in Greg's philosophy.

84

:

You didn't come this morning.

85

:

To listen to Greg's philosophy.

86

:

My dear daughter has been hearing

sermons from me for years.

87

:

She didn't come this morning just to

hear another one of Dad's sermons.

88

:

She came to be with God and his people.

89

:

And that's why you and I are here.

90

:

Amen?

91

:

And you never know when

it's going to touch you.

92

:

Sometimes it's a song, right?

93

:

Some of us are very musically inclined.

94

:

Sometimes just a word and a song.

95

:

Ooh.

96

:

Oh, that's talking to me.

97

:

You know, sometimes it's a scripture.

98

:

Sometimes it's a sister's voice.

99

:

You can listen to the

radio and the men's voice.

100

:

You sort of sing along as long

as nobody else is in the car.

101

:

But if one of those women come

on, sometimes that high voice

102

:

just goes straight to the heart.

103

:

It's like, ooh.

104

:

Wow.

105

:

So I don't know what's going

to hit you this morning, but

106

:

I pray that you're blessed.

107

:

Amen.

108

:

Three words.

109

:

Three words made all the

difference to the crucified crook.

110

:

The tale of the crucified crook is

what we're going to talk about today.

111

:

Three words can change your life.

112

:

Three words can make all the difference.

113

:

Help us turn corners.

114

:

As a professional counselor, it's

amazing how people have aha moments

115

:

with just the simplest of thoughts.

116

:

And it changes them, helps them

get over a challenge in their

117

:

life, helps them stop being stuck.

118

:

How about these three words?

119

:

I love you.

120

:

Some of us longed to hear that from

that special somebody, didn't we?

121

:

And once we heard it, pitter

pat, pitter pat, pitter pat.

122

:

I mean, it's changed everything.

123

:

I love you.

124

:

Kathy and I met at 13 years old.

125

:

7th grade.

126

:

I sat on the front row.

127

:

Because I was a good student.

128

:

No, really, because I

couldn't see very well.

129

:

And she walked past me.

130

:

And went to the end of the aisle behind

me, because that was the only open seat.

131

:

It was foreign language class.

132

:

And boy, did I go Peter Pan.

133

:

Didn't talk to her for a

couple years, but, oh, you

134

:

know, I noticed her right off.

135

:

We were head boy and head girl together.

136

:

And then, you know, I was

such a thug, she ran away.

137

:

She went off to Texas to

college, I went to Colorado.

138

:

But then, I became a Christian.

139

:

And it made all the difference.

140

:

And I started calling her.

141

:

We didn't have cell phones back then.

142

:

And Sunday night was the cheapest

time to make a long distance call.

143

:

And so I'd call her, and

we'd study the Bible.

144

:

And her stepmother was a

stewardess for American Airlines.

145

:

So she'd fly up to Colorado, stay

with the sisters in the dorm,

146

:

study the Bible, go to church.

147

:

Eventually she became a Christian.

148

:

And the rest is history.

149

:

She came to Boulder.

150

:

We graduated together.

151

:

We got married.

152

:

And live happily ever after.

153

:

That's my side of the story.

154

:

And I'm sticking to it.

155

:

Alright?

156

:

I love you.

157

:

You gotta get good at saying I'm sorry.

158

:

Especially us men.

159

:

Oh, come on, man.

160

:

There's a couple amens right here.

161

:

Especially us men.

162

:

Yeah.

163

:

There you go.

164

:

Get that deep voice going on.

165

:

You know, you brothers that want

to preach someday, sing bass.

166

:

It'll lower your voice.

167

:

You'll get a voice like Marcel.

168

:

Alright?

169

:

I mean, I wish I had a voice like Marcel.

170

:

I, I can get there if I think about it,

but then that's a little weird, isn't it?

171

:

I was wrong.

172

:

If you're a parent, you

gotta get good at that.

173

:

You gotta tell them.

174

:

I had to tell my little grandbaby

last night, I was wrong and I'm sorry.

175

:

She, she said, Papa, you need

to go give me a chocolate shake.

176

:

I said, I'm not getting

you a chocolate shake.

177

:

It's time for bed.

178

:

You can't have a chocolate shake.

179

:

And she's, she started crying.

180

:

My mommy and daddy let me have a chocolate

shake, take it and take it to bed.

181

:

She goes, yes.

182

:

And I said, I'm not going to go get you.

183

:

I'll get you a chocolate shake tomorrow,

but I'm not getting you a chocolate shake.

184

:

Well, it's an energy drink.

185

:

And yes, mom and dad let her.

186

:

Kathy corrected me.

187

:

So I had to go down and get the shake

and bring it up and apologize to her.

188

:

She goes, I told you my mommy

and daddy let me have a check.

189

:

And I said, honey, you're right.

190

:

Papa was wrong.

191

:

Papa was wrong.

192

:

I need help.

193

:

I forgive you.

194

:

I will change.

195

:

Please forgive me.

196

:

What are the three words that I

want us to focus in on this morning?

197

:

Jesus, remember me.

198

:

Remember me.

199

:

Then the crucified crook said, Jesus,

remember me when you come in your kingdom.

200

:

Jesus answered him.

201

:

Truly, I tell you today, you

will be with me in paradise.

202

:

Just three words.

203

:

Remember me.

204

:

I want to start with a

poem entitled The Gift.

205

:

It's a famous poem.

206

:

And because I can see so well in the back,

I can't see so well up front anymore.

207

:

I told my, my optometrist, you

know, I appreciate the cataract

208

:

surgery, so I can pass my driving

test, but I can't read as well.

209

:

Oh, just buy readers.

210

:

That was not a good answer for me.

211

:

To pull the metal splinter from my palm,

my father recited a story in a low voice.

212

:

I watched his lovely face

213

:

and not the blade.

214

:

Before the story ended, he'd removed

the iron sliver I thought I'd die from.

215

:

I can't remember the tale,

but I hear his voice still.

216

:

A well of dark water, a prayer.

217

:

And I recall his hands, two measures

of tenderness he laid against my face.

218

:

The flames of discipline

he raised above my head.

219

:

Had you entered that afternoon, you

would have thought you saw a man

220

:

planting something in a boy's palm.

221

:

A silver tear, a tiny flame.

222

:

Had you followed that boy, you

would have arrived here, where I

223

:

bend over my wife's right hand.

224

:

Look how I shave her thumbnail down,

so carefully she feels no pain.

225

:

Watch as I lift the splinter out.

226

:

I was seven when my father

took my hand like this.

227

:

I did not hold that shard between my

fingers and think, metal that will

228

:

bury me, christen it little assassin.

229

:

Or, going deep for my heart.

230

:

And I did not lift up my wound

and cry, death visited me.

231

:

You know how children are dramatic.

232

:

I did what a child does.

233

:

When he's given something to

keep forever, I kissed my dad.

234

:

What did this father give to this son?

235

:

A memory.

236

:

A memory.

237

:

Precious, tender gift.

238

:

He remembers his father's hand.

239

:

He doesn't even remember the

story that distracted him.

240

:

He just remembers his father

relieving him of pain.

241

:

Brothers and sisters, that's

what our Father in Heaven

242

:

wants to do for us every day.

243

:

Relieve us of our pain.

244

:

You know, for years in the ministry

I thought, everything's good.

245

:

Most people don't have any

problems, a few people do.

246

:

But, it's just good.

247

:

And now it seems like now that

I'm older, everybody has problems.

248

:

And a few people have it like it's

good and not a problem right now.

249

:

But we all know that isn't going to

last, that everybody has problems, right?

250

:

And so we need this foundation of

God's tender touch, tender care.

251

:

Let's read our text this morning.

252

:

You can look along.

253

:

You can look in your, your, uh, phone.

254

:

You can look in your Bible.

255

:

It's just a short passage

and you know the story.

256

:

But listen to the Word of God.

257

:

The sacred, holy Word of God.

258

:

One of the criminals who hung

there hurled insults at him.

259

:

Just threw things at Jesus

while he's dying on the cross.

260

:

That sounds a little cruel to me.

261

:

Aren't you the Messiah?

262

:

Save yourself and us.

263

:

But the other criminal rebuked him.

264

:

Don't you fear God, he said.

265

:

Since you are under the same sentence.

266

:

We are punished justly.

267

:

For we are getting what our deeds deserve.

268

:

But this man has done

nothing, nothing wrong.

269

:

Then he said, Jesus, remember me

when you come in your kingdom.

270

:

Jesus answered.

271

:

Truly, I tell you today you

will be with me in paradise.

272

:

We need to parse this story

because we can learn so much.

273

:

One of the criminals who

hung their hurled insults.

274

:

But what did he say?

275

:

Prove yourself, God.

276

:

Answer this prayer.

277

:

Show me yourself.

278

:

Do a miracle for me.

279

:

Bless me.

280

:

I'm not going to believe unless

you come more my direction.

281

:

He's come a lot towards us.

282

:

But it seems like instead of

taking the step of faith, we

283

:

want God to take that other step.

284

:

And prove himself.

285

:

Prove that you're the Messiah.

286

:

Prove to me personally

that I should follow you.

287

:

That I should love you,

that I should confess you.

288

:

This is the voice of the world, folks.

289

:

SAVE US!

290

:

Oh, and save yourself, too.

291

:

This is not a good heart.

292

:

This is not a prayer.

293

:

This is not humility.

294

:

This is pride.

295

:

Poking at Jesus.

296

:

Insulting Jesus.

297

:

Mocking Jesus.

298

:

This is what the crowds

were doing to Jesus.

299

:

Crucify Him.

300

:

Crucify Him.

301

:

Save yourself and us.

302

:

Prove you're the Messiah.

303

:

I don't know about you, I

need to be honest though.

304

:

There's times when after I prayed

something for a while, maybe months,

305

:

I start getting a little impatient.

306

:

I start getting a little demanding.

307

:

I'm sorry.

308

:

I'll just confess.

309

:

You know, I've been praying

a prayer for four years.

310

:

Hasn't been answered yet.

311

:

Oh, it's been answered.

312

:

Later.

313

:

God can say yes.

314

:

God can say no.

315

:

Or he can say later.

316

:

Just like when your husband asks you

to do something, your wife asks you

317

:

to do something, you can say yes.

318

:

You can say no, or can we negotiate?

319

:

Right?

320

:

Got a little marriage counseling

there for you, alright?

321

:

Let's not demand of the Lord.

322

:

The Lord doesn't make deals.

323

:

He doesn't make deals.

324

:

The next part.

325

:

Oh, this is good.

326

:

This is good.

327

:

But the other criminal,

this is the crucified crook.

328

:

The first was the unrepentant thief.

329

:

This is the repentant thief.

330

:

Rebuked him the unrepentant thief.

331

:

Don't you fear God?

332

:

You don't say that unless you're having

some sense of fear of God in your heart.

333

:

See, hard times crucifixion taking up

your cross can soften you or harden you.

334

:

One thief was hardened.

335

:

One thief was softened.

336

:

There was all these contrasts, always,

the right picture, the wrong picture,

337

:

Jesus always paints a picture for us.

338

:

The pictures stay in our minds, the

words leave us, but we have these

339

:

word pictures that we never forget.

340

:

And we need to embrace that crucified

crook, the one that rebuked the other one.

341

:

Don't you fear God, since you

are under the same sentence?

342

:

I mean, we're up here because

we deserve it, the man's saying.

343

:

But this other man doesn't deserve it.

344

:

We're punished justly.

345

:

For we are getting what our deeds deserve.

346

:

You know, usually, if you stole in the

ancient world, you got your hand cut off.

347

:

You stole again, you got

the other hand cut off.

348

:

I guess after you steal three

times, you get put to death.

349

:

I mean, in the old west, if

you stole a horse, it was over

350

:

right then, they hung you.

351

:

Alright?

352

:

You stole cattle.

353

:

Certain things just, you

know, lines you don't cross.

354

:

They had done so much that they

had been sentenced to death.

355

:

This was the extreme

punishment of these men.

356

:

We are getting what our deeds deserve,

but this man has done nothing wrong.

357

:

You know, if you think about

this, this is the only person

358

:

that stood up for Jesus that day.

359

:

The only one.

360

:

I'm going to take off my

glasses so I can see you.

361

:

See, if I see you, it's a conversation.

362

:

If we can't see each other, then

it's a speech and you drove off

363

:

and your mind goes other places.

364

:

But now you're all paying attention

because you're like, he's going to look

365

:

at me and I need to be looking back.

366

:

Yeah.

367

:

Yeah.

368

:

Good face.

369

:

I like that smile.

370

:

Yeah.

371

:

Yeah, and I used to, when I preach,

only look at the smiling faces.

372

:

Now I look at the, all the faces.

373

:

Because I have one of those

faces that I wouldn't look at

374

:

if someone was preaching to me.

375

:

So now I look at everybody.

376

:

We're punished justly.

377

:

He said, this man has done nothing wrong.

378

:

You know, the disciples

were thinking that.

379

:

Pilate even knew it, but he didn't say it.

380

:

Nobody said it, but the crucified crook.

381

:

The disciples stood there silent.

382

:

Some of them weeping.

383

:

The women were weeping, but

nobody said, This is wrong!

384

:

This is shouldn't be!

385

:

This is ungodly!

386

:

This is unjust!

387

:

But this one man said, this isn't just,

388

:

we're getting what we justly

deserve, but not Jesus, not Jesus.

389

:

And so when then he asked in the

next frame, Jesus, remember me?

390

:

Jesus just met him.

391

:

What's he going to remember?

392

:

Those few words, those few sentences.

393

:

This man has done nothing wrong.

394

:

We are punished justly.

395

:

Jesus remembered his confession of

his sin and his confession of faith.

396

:

And because of those two

confessions, Jesus said, today,

397

:

you, yeah, good looking you.

398

:

Yeah, you sister.

399

:

Yes, you.

400

:

smiling at me.

401

:

Praise God for you.

402

:

God bless you.

403

:

You back there who I met as I came in.

404

:

Amen.

405

:

Today, you will be with me in paradise.

406

:

You know, I first read

this in the eighties.

407

:

I came up to a lectureship at

Pepperdine University before

408

:

I ever went to school there.

409

:

Went to school there a long time.

410

:

But a friend of mine that I had met at a

conference in Manaus, Brazil, was doing

411

:

morning devotionals in the amphitheater.

412

:

Max Flocato.

413

:

I met him years ago.

414

:

I probably shouldn't say this, but he

and his wife were having a few bumps.

415

:

They lived right acr they were

in the room right across from us.

416

:

So they asked the elder that I was

rooming with from San Diego, George

417

:

Havens, if He would get with them and

so they told me to take a hike and

418

:

they had a little marriage counseling

and so we developed a friendship.

419

:

And so I heard he was

speaking early in the morning.

420

:

I didn't get excited about

getting up that early and

421

:

missing my breakfast, but I went.

422

:

And I heard this.

423

:

The only thing more outlandish than

the request was that it was granted.

424

:

Just trying to picture

the scene is enough.

425

:

To short circuit the

grandest of imaginations.

426

:

A flat nosed ex con asking

God, Son, for eternal life.

427

:

But try to imagine the

appeal being honored.

428

:

Well that moves us even beyond the

realm of reality into absurdity.

429

:

But as absurd as it may appear,

that is exactly what happened.

430

:

He who deserved hell, got heaven.

431

:

And we are left with a puzzling riddle.

432

:

What, for goodness sake, was

Jesus trying to teach us?

433

:

What was he trying to prove by pardoning

this thug, who, in all probability, had

434

:

never said grace, much less deserved it?

435

:

This is the beginning of a chapter in

No Wonder They Call Him the Savior.

436

:

It's one of my very favorite

books of all the hundreds and

437

:

hundreds of books I've read.

438

:

I love this book.

439

:

It's Jesus statements from the cross.

440

:

It's about the grace and love of God.

441

:

And the title of the chapter is

The Tale of the Crucified Crook.

442

:

And for some reason, that

morning devotional touched me.

443

:

For some reason, I identified

with that crucified crook.

444

:

I have genes of

445

:

convicts in me.

446

:

If you've ever done a genogram,

what you do is your mom's side of

447

:

the family, you, you build out all

the relationships on that side.

448

:

And then you build out all the

relationships on your father's side.

449

:

And when I was in graduate school, they

made me do a genogram of my family.

450

:

And on my mom's side, in every

generation, there's a lawyer.

451

:

And on my dad's side, guess.

452

:

There's a convict that went to prison.

453

:

Opposites attract.

454

:

Right?

455

:

Beauty and the Beast.

456

:

Kathy, the Beauty, the Beast.

457

:

Alright?

458

:

Opposites attract.

459

:

I mean, I looked at this

and I never realized that.

460

:

I have an Uncle Buck.

461

:

If you don't have an

Uncle Buck, I'm sorry.

462

:

I have an Uncle Buck.

463

:

And he went to prison.

464

:

For cattle wrestling.

465

:

Now he says Grandpa made him do

it, but he still did it, alright?

466

:

So I have that gene.

467

:

I don't know why it

touched me that morning.

468

:

But I felt like I'm that crook.

469

:

I'm that guy that doesn't deserve grace.

470

:

I'm that guy that's not

naturally spiritual.

471

:

I have a lot of anger in me.

472

:

I got a lot of bad thoughts.

473

:

Mean thoughts.

474

:

I was the youngest of four boys

and my older brothers picked on

475

:

me until I was 18 and I went away

to college and I never moved home.

476

:

They still, all three, lived in the

same town until one of them died.

477

:

But I had to get away.

478

:

I was like Charlie Brown.

479

:

Why is everybody always picking on me?

480

:

Some of you are laughing.

481

:

You remember the song.

482

:

The rest of you are looking up on YouTube.

483

:

But I, I stuffed all that.

484

:

And I knew inside I had a darkness.

485

:

I had one minister that worked with me.

486

:

He said, Greg, you scare me.

487

:

You have a cold part of your heart.

488

:

Don't let anybody tell

you things like that.

489

:

Because they're not true.

490

:

Because I'm made in the image of God.

491

:

And I don't have any more

coldness than he does.

492

:

Alright?

493

:

We all got sinful nature, right?

494

:

Until we get to heaven,

we all got struggles.

495

:

We all got issues.

496

:

And if you're faking it this

morning that you're perfect, we

497

:

know you're not Jesus Christ.

498

:

We know.

499

:

We know.

500

:

So don't fake it.

501

:

But Jesus says today, you and me

502

:

will be together in paradise.

503

:

I'm looking forward to my paradise.

504

:

I like Psalms 23.

505

:

I've attended 500 deaths, over 500

deaths as a chaplain for 8 years.

506

:

At least once a week I

had to attend a death.

507

:

So in 8 years, over 500 deaths.

508

:

So I've seen a lot of people die.

509

:

And I've seen good death

and I've seen bad death.

510

:

I've seen peaceful death and

I've seen anxious, anxious death.

511

:

I'm gonna have a good death.

512

:

Because I'm going to sit there

in that bed until Jesus comes and

513

:

takes my hand and walks me through

the valley of the shadow of death.

514

:

And so I'm going to fear no evil.

515

:

I'm going to be so excited.

516

:

I'm not going to be a burden on my family.

517

:

I pray that I don't get sick

in this long, prolonged death.

518

:

I just pray that at 85 I dropped it.

519

:

And I've told my daughter, that's my DNR.

520

:

I'm not, I mean, don't resuscitate me.

521

:

Let me go.

522

:

Let me go.

523

:

Alright?

524

:

Cause I know where I'm going.

525

:

Cause the tale of the crucified

crook is the tale of Greg.

526

:

Now I really didn't have, don't

have a problem with stealing.

527

:

I will confess, I stole some

cigarettes when I was young.

528

:

You know, the little store by my

house, they didn't lock the window.

529

:

So you just slide open the window, you

can reach in, the only thing you could

530

:

get was cigarettes, so we'd reach in,

then we'd get sick, so we quit doing that.

531

:

That's personal, I probably

shouldn't have said that.

532

:

But when you preach, you just move on, so.

533

:

Christ pardoned the thief for eternity.

534

:

To confirm to everyone that grace,

and here's my point, is a gift.

535

:

The contrast between the bitter thief

and the humble thief describes the

536

:

choice between faith and unbelief.

537

:

Salvation can be received on our deathbed

even if our sincere faith is expressed.

538

:

Real quickly to end this sermon, I

want to go through a history of grace.

539

:

Because I want to expand your thoughts and

help you truly understand grace is a gift.

540

:

You know,

541

:

I've been, for some reason,

what's been catching my attention

542

:

is that commercial by Red Bull.

543

:

Red Bull gives you wings.

544

:

I don't believe that.

545

:

I went and bought a Red Bull.

546

:

I drank it.

547

:

I didn't get wings.

548

:

I like Red Bull Racing Formula One.

549

:

My son in law introduced me.

550

:

I love it.

551

:

I'm glad they finally

beat those Mercedes guys.

552

:

You know, I, I, I really

like Red Bull Racing.

553

:

I don't really like Red Bull drinks.

554

:

I drink water or, uh,

Crystal Light these days.

555

:

Alright?

556

:

My wife scolded me for buying a Red Bull.

557

:

She's gonna keep you up tonight.

558

:

Scared me, so I took some

Tylenol PM, so I didn't.

559

:

But Red Bull doesn't give you wings.

560

:

That's my point.

561

:

Smart water doesn't make you smart.

562

:

Jesus gives you wings.

563

:

In the Old Testament,

grace came through what?

564

:

Obedience to the commands of God, right?

565

:

During the patriarchal period, during

the mosaical period, grace came through

566

:

obeying the law and temple sacrifices.

567

:

Jesus.

568

:

All right.

569

:

And then in the New Testament, grace

came through faith in the deity of Jesus.

570

:

You read the gospel of John.

571

:

You believe that Jesus was

the Christ, the son of God.

572

:

Then you were saved.

573

:

The sacrifice of Jesus

during the church period.

574

:

You could join the community if

you embrace that Jesus died on

575

:

the cross for you and you would

confess that Jesus is Lord.

576

:

And then unfortunately, during

Catholic Christianity, the pendulum

577

:

swung from being in the middle of

balance between grace and truth.

578

:

It went way over to the truth side.

579

:

And the church controlled grace.

580

:

The only way you could get grace

was through the sacraments.

581

:

Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion,

Anointing of the Sick, Confession

582

:

and Penance, Holy Orders, Becoming a

Nun or a Priest, or Holy Matrimony.

583

:

And then, the pendulum swung

all the way the other way during

584

:

the Prostitute Revolution.

585

:

During the Reformation, Lutherans

said, especially Martin Luther,

586

:

because he was an agonized soul.

587

:

He was so guilt ridden, always.

588

:

If you read his autobiography.

589

:

That he was longing to feel God's grace.

590

:

And so he said it was a gift,

but then he still didn't feel it.

591

:

So then he said that

faith even was the gift.

592

:

That everything's a gift.

593

:

And unfortunately that cheapened grace.

594

:

And then Calvin took it a step

further with the whole idea of tulip.

595

:

Total depravity of man.

596

:

Unmerited favor and election.

597

:

Limited atonement.

598

:

Irresistible grace and the

perseverance of saints.

599

:

All that just made Grace cheap.

600

:

Made it cheap.

601

:

And so a lot of us, Evangelical

Protestant type people, we've

602

:

been a little shy on grace.

603

:

Because we didn't want grace

to be a license for sin.

604

:

And in our movement, I'm finally

getting to us, so perk up!

605

:

Perk up!

606

:

We're almost done!

607

:

But now I'm talking about us!

608

:

We got grace.

609

:

From the Restoration Heritage, from

the Stone Campbell Movement, through

610

:

conversion, the Great Awakenings.

611

:

That people became alive again

spiritually if they had an experience.

612

:

And it was a conversion experience.

613

:

First through repentance

and then through baptisms.

614

:

And so if we would hear and believe

and confess and repent and be baptized,

615

:

follow the formula, then we got grace.

616

:

But then what do we do after that?

617

:

Feels great to be converted, but then

you got to live the whole Christian life

618

:

Right, and we haven't done a whole lot

of motivating each other through grace

619

:

We we converted each other by grace,

but then we haven't motivated each other

620

:

completely by grace Grace is a gift.

621

:

It's a gift and then discipleship

Conversion we took it a little higher

622

:

than the restoration movement You say

you get You get grace through lordship

623

:

if Jesus is Lord of your life, and that's

true, but that's not all there is That's

624

:

sort of our part But he gives grace as

a gift and so a lot of us haven't felt

625

:

secure in our salvation I got you know

I don't know if I deserve grace because

626

:

the you know the Lord Wasn't totally

Lord today Because I bought a Red Bull

627

:

And I didn't get wings We are

always looking, testing, aren't we?

628

:

Am I good enough to have

this prayer answered?

629

:

Have I done enough?

630

:

Have I shared enough?

631

:

Have I read enough?

632

:

Have I prayed enough?

633

:

Have I And we never feel

like it's enough, right?

634

:

And so, this morning, let's just

adjust our theology a little bit.

635

:

Grace is a gift from the

tender hands of that Father.

636

:

It's a gift.

637

:

And so all you need to do is kissing back.

638

:

Kissing.

639

:

Accept that gift, folks.

640

:

Accept it with all your heart, because

God is faithful, he's righteous, and

641

:

he's merciful, he's so very good,

and he wants to give you the gift.

642

:

Today, you will be with me in paradise.

643

:

I'm going to close with a kiss.

644

:

A poem.

645

:

But I want you to remember from

this sermon, grace gives you wings.

646

:

Grace gives you wings.

647

:

So now, every time you hear that

commercial, the truth comes to your mind.

648

:

Grace gives you wings.

649

:

The Greatest Gift by Sue Ellison.

650

:

The greatest gift could be to believe, to

understand, to accept all that you see.

651

:

The greatest, it will surely

decline if you don't use it.

652

:

The greatest gift is to breathe

and to flow and to share with the

653

:

world your inspiring inner glow,

which is the gift of the Holy

654

:

Spirit when you became a Christian.

655

:

And the church said, Amen.

656

:

God bless you.
